Abstract | No research (to our limited knowledge) has focused on or achieved a clear and principled understanding of the functions of compliment. The present paper, firstly, based on the definition of “face” by Brown and Levinson (1987), suggests a new version of their “face” (two universal concepts): negative need and positive need; secondly, with the help of the speech role classification by Halliday (2004), this paper puts forward a new theoretical model of human interaction (which has yielded new definitions of im/politeness); finally, the paper applies the new theoretical model of human interaction to the functions of compliment with an attempt to achieve a principled understanding of the functions. |
